Stored Emotional Stress in our Body

Updated: Aug 8, 2023

We frequently try to push negative feelings out of our awareness, such as annoyance, fear, and grief. Such feelings are associated with helplessness or impotence. So, to eliminate them, we engage in denial or suppression. We push them out of our consciousness and ignore our emotions. Instead of noticing, processing, and releasing these negative feelings through massage, we bottle them up.

The human body is a remarkable recording system that stores every sight, sound, taste, touch, and emotion we experience throughout our lives. Ailments are just one of the responses that negative emotions can trigger in our bodies.

We hold negative emotions in our bodies so we do not have to bring them up in our minds and deal with them. Anger, sadness, feeling bad about ourselves, and fear hurt when we are forced to deal with them. They can even become so overwhelming they interfere with our everyday lives. That is why many of us suppress them.

Massage therapy and the release of negative emotions

Massage therapy can help release these negative emotions and reduce the tension in our bodies. When massage therapists are working on a client’s body, they often encounter areas of the body that are incredibly tight. That is a clue that this is an area of the client’s body in which negative emotions are stored. These areas are so tight that the energy flow is blocked and craniosacral motion is restricted

These areas of stored emotions often begin releasing when a massage therapist initially begins placing their hands in the area. Deep tissue massage can often bring about major emotional releases of negative emotions that have been stored in the body for years. Craniosacral massage techniques are also helpful in getting negative emotions released.

The goal of Somatic Therapy is to help you notice bodily sensations stemming from mental health issues and use this awareness to acknowledge and work through painful or distressing sensations.

Recognizing Bodily Sensations

When you enter therapy, you’ll start by learning more about your autonomic nervous system and the part it plays in your trauma response. This knowledge helps many people who feel confused about their response during a traumatic event or believe they should have reacted differently.

Body-oriented therapies hold that therapeutic touch can be immensely helpful for many people, and SE therapists typically receive training in how to use therapeutic touch effectively and ethically.

Importance of the Power of Touch and Massage Therapy

1. A safe, supportive environment combined with the power of touch may allow someone to feel vulnerable enough to let whatever needs to be processed come forth.

2. Massage therapy can open up tension patterns that have been working as armor. Constricting certain muscles consistently can lead to what is like a protective wall from pain, physical or otherwise. Relaxing these muscles that we've been subconsciously tensing can feel very vulnerable.

3. Sometimes memories can come up through touch. This can happen because relaxing an area reminds us of just how tightly we were holding on and this may bring up memories of why we were holding on and protecting ourselves so tightly. It may also be that a specific part of the body has suffered from an injury or trauma and even though it hasn't been thought about in a while, the body remembers!

4. Massage therapy is a time that is completely devoted to noticing the sensations in your body. It's an opportunity to notice what comes up, feel the feelings, and let it pass through.

Therefore, a massage or bodywork session can be a safe space to allow what needs to come up, to come up. If someone is very overwhelmed by the emotions or memories coming up for them then it is important that they find a great psychotherapist to help them process what is coming up.
